    Omkara Review
A brilliant adaptation, but an OK movie
In spite of its rural setting, Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie ‘Omkara’ is very Shakespearean to its core.

Seen purely as an adaptation of the English bard’s ‘Othello’, ‘Omkara’ is a more..

Omkara is Vishal Bhardwaj 's interpretation of William Shakespeare’s classic, Othello – a play that has been made four times in Hollywood but is being brought to life for the first time in a mainstream Hindi film in a commercial format.

The intense Ajay Devgan plays the title role of Omkara or Omi – a gifted chieftain who heads a gang of outlaws.
    Bhardwaj writes in his
book based on the play: “Ajay was the first to be cast, not to speak, the easiest. His tough as nails presence speaks of an unspoken authority and righteousness that characterises my Omkara. He was the trigger point instrumental in getting the film made.”

Kareena Kapoor plays Omkara’s beautiful lover Dolly.

Bhardwaj writes: “In the play, Desdemona’s breathtaking beauty forms the basis of Othello’s sexual jealousy and eventual breakdown. I was on the lookout for a pure face, who could play my Dolly – someone who is completely besotted with Omi and at the same time completely unaware of the workings of his jealous mind. In Kareena, I found that perfect balance of innocence and sensuality and she has quietly taken the center stage with her performance.”

Vivek Oberoi plays the dynamic Kesu – one of the chief cohorts of Omkara.
Bhardwaj writes: “Vivek surrendered himself to the script and surprised me with his diligence…For one sequence, he had to play the guitar and sing. He practiced non-stop for a month and on the day of the shoot, blew everyone with his performance. It’s turned out to be one of the best scenes in the film.”

Saif Ali Khan plays the crafty Langda Tyagi – another of the chief cohorts of Omkara.
Bhardwaj writes: “With Saif, his character needed to be reptile like and yet, physically look like a rugged fighter. It was critical that he cut his hair. He had been reluctant to do so. I left the decision to his conscience. Finally on Eid, a day before we began shooting, he chopped it off, calling it qurbani (sacrifice) to Allah. In that single moment of truth, my Langda was born…Evil had rarely looked so cool on screen.”

The veteran Naseeruddin Shah plays the role of Bhaisaab – a miniscule but a pivotal part in the project. The talented Konkana Sen plays Indu – Langda's wife in the film.

Bipasha Basu makes a special appearance in the film as Billo Chaman Bahar.

The story is set amidst the political mafia of UP…a strife-ridden melting pot in north India. The story begins when Omkara appoints Kesu and not Langda as his chief lieutenant.

Langda's pride is slighted and raging with envy he hatches a plot to falsely implicate Omkara's beautiful lover Dolly, in a love affair with Kesu.

With the unwitting aid of Indu and the willing help of Raju, a fellow grouch, Langda's plan takes shape and results in horrific tragedy. Using petty insinuations and lies, Langda keeps poisoning Omkara's mind till one day it snaps and Omkara goes about tearing up his own safe and secure world.

By the time Omkara realizes what he has done and the backlash of his actions it is too late…

Omkara follows one man's descent into sexual jealousy because of his passionate love for his woman and the final destruction of that love at the altar of blind obsession.

Love is blind but the flip side of love is jealousy and that can tear apart the strongest and bravest of warriors – in this case Omkara.

Bhardwaj writes in his book: “I set the story amidst the political mafia of Uttar Pradesh… a strife-ridden melting pot in north India…I spent my childhood in the small town of Meerut in UP. This interpretation of Othello as my characters populate a place and language that I have known closely…Somewhere they have left their Shakespearean roots far behind and surrendered to me…For example I based the character of the central antagonist, Langda Tyagi, on a childhood friend whose growth as a gangster had happened in the front of my eyes.”

Like the legendary Hollywood filmmaker, Orson Wells, Bhardwaj is fascinated with Shakespearean drama – one of his finest works remains his interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth – Maqbool .

Omkara in spirit stays true to the central theme of Othello and ends up humanizing Shakespeare's characters with the necessary folklore and ethnic charm that is required for a contemporary story setting.

Produced by Kumar Mangat, Omkara is directed by Bhardwaj, who is also the music director of the film. Lyrics are penned by the great Gulzar .

Omkara is slated to release on July 28, 2006 along with Anthony Kaun Hai

Fanna movie is a big hit

(Fanaa) Movie, which is said to have shades of ‘Noorie’ and ‘Dil Se’, is the love story of a terrorist and a Kashmiri girl, who is deprived of the pleasures of life. The entry of a young man changes her life and she goes through several emotional ups and downs in the film. Fanna (Fanaa) Movie, which is said to have shades of ‘Noorie’ and ‘Dil Se’, is the love story of a terrorist and a Kashmiri girl, who is deprived of the pleasures of life. The entry of a young man changes her life and she goes through several emotional ups and downs in the film. The movie has Kajol playing a beautiful blind Kashmiri girl named Zooni Ali Beg. Zooni wants to discover and experience life without letting her handicap become a hurdle. She leaves her home to experience her own life out in the world. There is where she meets Rehan played by Aamir Khan. Rehan is a local tour guide with a inclination for poetry who believes to live life to the fullest. Rehan is absolutely obsessed by Zooni and takes her places in Delhi. Zooni enjoys every minute of her life but she doesn’t know what lies ahead as Rehan has not shown her the dark phases of his life. Fanaa promos seem to suggest that the Aamir-Kajol paring too is likely to fire up the box office. The In the looks department, Kajol is still a stunner - the flab has disappeared, she is trimmer and prettier than ever before. And that’s not surprising, given that Yash Raj Films is known to give special attention to the appearances of its cast.

    CORPORATE

Madhur Bhandarkar’s films seem to follow a certain pattern. All his films expose some thing to the audience; exposé on various systems, structures, lives etc.Exposé.

Corporate revolves around the business rivalry between two companies, both of them big players in the food industry.

Every element one could think of in this genre - money, power, politics, treachery, foreign investments, and shamefully shady deals – finds a place in the plot. And, that is all there is.

There is no emotional thread that ties the proceedings; nor, is there any revelatory moment that makes us connect to the characters.

The result is a dull, long-drawn film that diligently documents the goings-on in the two companies which play it all dirty to beat each other, and goes nowhere else.

The corporate log, the politicians, the middlemen, roll their dice on and on, sometimes losing to, sometimes striking back at,

and sometimes winning over their counterparts. It’s late into the film, when the pesticide scandal episode surfaces in the plot,

the film engages us, despite the oh-so-naïve ethical stand some characters take in the meeting when the issue comes up.

Among the actors, Rajat Kapoor was really cool, as only he can be. Kay Kay Menon was very good

    HERA PHERI

    HERA PHERI

This clearly wasn’t Priyadarshan’s week, at least as long as the overseas box office is concerned.

For, it was his rival Neeraj Vohra, who directed the sequel of Priyan’s hit comedy Hera Pheri, who had the last laugh.

Akshay Kumar’s loyal fans abroad stood by him once again helping the Vohra’s comedy Phir Hera Pheri triumph over Priyan’s new movie, Chup Chup Ke, which released on the same day.

Priyan had directed the first Hera Pheri three years ago and had seen it become one of the biggest hits of the year.

Fans abroad preferred the Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Bipasha Basu comedy to Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur’s Chup Chup Ke which had a ho-hum opening on both sides of the Atlantic

    Rang De Basanti

    Rang De Basanti

is a good film. It lives up to the expectations and most important thing is that it surely meets the thought behind a tagline “a generation awakens”.

This movie is a defining experience,

A story of ordinary university students, who are either drop outs/unemployed and do not believe in living life the way the world is ‘conditioned’ to live and others expect them to live.

They drink beer and salute to India Gate, drive fast on rural roads and take many risks for fun.

The bond of friendship they have

...... The idea of fun they have

..... The importance to humanity they have

...... The values love and relationship they have

... And...The patriotism they awake to

    ...... The strength they display......

The urban youth of India can very well relate to them. This movie has affected many people in urban India.

It has affected the very idea of a good nation.

Now we see the “Rang De Basanti Effect” at many places. People have started voicing their concerns and opinion..The producers of the film have done a remarkable job.

    A HIT FILM KRRISH

    Krrish Good Movie

After Superman on Saturday it was Krrish on Sunday. It was the Hollywood Superhero and the Bollywood Superhero back to back for me. I must say I was quite impressed with Krrish. The movie was good in most parts, though acting from a few was not upto the mark. The graphics and special effects stole the show for me. I think this is a path breaking movie in Bollywood in terms of graphics and special effects. From the days of Inteligence Bureau being seated in a Cyber Cafe using powerpoint slides, Word documents, flash animations and HTML to find criminals, we have indeed come a long way.
