Jacqueline Fernandez with Amitabh bacchan in Aladin

    An interview with Jacqueline Fernandez

In conversation with Jacqueline Fernandez, who is making her debut as an actor with ALADIN this Friday.
How would you describe your role in ALADIN?

I play the role of a very sweet and normal college girl called Jasmine in ALADIN. She is not a princess like in the fable. Jasmine is not some one who has a distinct personality. Jasmine possesses the qualities of a princess in a fairy tale, though she is not a princess in ALADIN. I did feel a little bit of pressure because people know who Jasmine is and I'd have to live up to the expectations. Luckily I had no comparisons. I had to set a standard for Jasmine. In that way it was a challenge for me.

Do you think it has been very easy for you to bag ALADIN?

To be honest, I have been extremely lucky. I think I have my own genie who has granted me my wishes. There are many talented young girls who find it very difficult to get a break in Bollywood. I am indeed because within just a month of my coming to Mumbai, I succeeded in getting my big break and now have my foot in the door

    How did you bag ALADIN?

I did go for an audition for ALADIN. I should confess that it was my first and worst audition. In fact, I thought that it would be the last time that I will face the camera. I messed up my lines and giggled. The casting director asked me to talk about a happy and sad event in my life. I guess I sounded true when I narrated my sad moment, because I tried to be true to the character. I was told that I was on board the film the same evening.

How did you prepare for your part?

The brief that I got from director Sujoy Ghosh was that I should not try to get too much into my character but just be natural. I do not think I prepared for the role. I prepared for the scenes, read the script many times day and night and did the rehearsals.

Considering that you are a Sri Lankan national, how were you influenced by Bollywood?

It may sound cliched, but the fact is that right from the age of 7, I wanted to be an actress. I should confess that I have been influenced a lot by Bollywood, because I used to make it a point to watch all Bollywood films, in addition to International films, since Sri Lankan films were never shown in Bahrain. I grew up in Bahrain and moved to Panipitiya outside Colombo, where my parents stay.

How would you compare Bollywood with Hollywood?

I do not know how to compare Bollywood with Hollywood. All that I can say is that I chose to make my debut in Bollywood with a film like ALADIN. Bollywood stands on its own with its different way of sending out message to the public. In terms of emotions, acting is difficult. Bollywood is a little more emotional than Hollywood because the actors are blessed here to have the chance to let themselves loose and touch the hearts of the people.

How was the experience of sharing the screen with an actor like Amitabh Bachchan?

Just to be in the same frame with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan was more than what I could have asked for. Riteish told me that he had spent his entire life to be with Mr. Bachchan, whereas I was lucky to have had the opportunity to be with him in my very first film. Mr. Bachchan has been my source of inspiration from day one, because I learnt by being in his orbit. Mr. Bachchan is very polite and kind but probably opens up only when he knows a person better.

Are you scared that you may be slotted as a foreign actress?

I am scared but, I hope that I am not slotted because I want to be different. If you are just perceived as a foreigner, you tend to get limited chance because there will be the tendency to cast you as a NRI or a modern day woman. It is always a big challenge for an actor to essay different roles.

To what extent, are you game for exposure as an actress?

I think there is a very fine thin line between exposure and over exposure. You, as an actor have to judge what suits you. I have absolutely no problem at all as far as exposure is concerned, if it justifies the role. In that case, I would be ready to do what it takes to take the message to the audiences.

How did you find Sujoy Ghosh as a director?

Sujoy is wonderful. I love the relationship that he shares with his actors. I love his spirit and the positivity which he brings on the sets. What I like about him as a director is that he does not shouts and is very relaxed. His nature rubs off on his actors and brings life to the sets.

Do you think Katrina has set the trend of foreign actresses making it big in Bollywood?

Yes. Katrina has proved every one wrong by being an example of a hard working woman who is dedicated and passionate to her work. I do not think she is today what she is just because of Salman Khan. It will be unfair to attribute her success to Salman Khan. Why would a director invest millions of rupees for the sake of Salman Khan in Katrina? Kat brings in so much into the table.

What is your role in Jaane Kahan Se Aaye Ho Tum?

I play the role of an alien in JAANE KAHAN SE AAYE HO TUM. I come from Venus and crash land into Riteish's arms. It is a very sweet story. I play a girl who comes in search of true love. Since Riteish also has been in search of true love all his life in the film, together we set out on our crazy journey to find out love.

Have you found out your true love in life?

All that I can say is life is too spontaneous to be able to make a plan and hence I take life as it comes along.

Jai and Meera is a modern-day couple in London. They are very happy together but do not believe in tying each other down. So when life pulls them in different directions, they decide to go with the flow. “These Heer-Ranjha, Romeo-Juliet type janam janam ka saath type couples exist only in story books”, Jai says. In the real life, we have to be practical. Love Kal Delhi, Calcutta - 1965. Veer Singh is struck by the thunderbolt when he sees Harleen for the first time. Soon after, he stands under a tree and swears that “is janam mein aur har janam mein… yehi meri votti banegi – Harleen Kaur.” He travels a thousand kilometers by train to stand under her balcony only to have a glimpse of her face. And yet not speak a word with her. Love Aaj Kal Veer does not understand how Jai can treat matters of the heart without passion, like a financial transaction. Jai does not understand how Veer Singh could have been so naïve and silly about Harleen in the days of his youth. But as both stories unfold, we realize that the process of relationship might be different in different eras, but the experience of being in love remains the same. So there is the frolic and despair of modern living. The liberation and confusion. And there is the past – the times of innocence and compulsion. And there is distance, and the fondness that increases with distance. Gaps widen between two people, but bridges keep growing too.

Ash Abhi Run in to truble

Bollywood actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwary Rai Bachchan failed to return to their hotel just after shooting for their new film "Ravan" on Wednesday evening after an elephant went out of control and killed its mahout.

The incident, which occurred after the shooting around 5 p.m. in Athirapally waterfalls area, blocked the road at nearby Athirapally forest area of Kerala's Thrissur district.

Kunju, the elephant, stood in the middle of the road, thus, obstructing the traffic to move through the road.

As per the latest information "Kunju" had been controlled by chaining it veterinary doctors were on their way from Thrissur to attend the disgruntled elephant, possibly to tranquillise it. .

The killed mahout was Andavan, aged 51.

"Ravan"is being shot in Hindi and Tamil at the thick forests near the waterfalls. Abhishek plays the lead role in the Hindi version while Tamil actor Vikram plays the lead role in regional version, with Aishwarya being the heroine in both versions of the film.

erala's Athirapally waterfalls has been one of the favourite locations for major blockbuster films in south India.

Noted film director Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se" song "Jiya Jale", and the film Guru song "Barso re" were shot at the Athirapally waterfalls.

Located at the entrance to Sholayar ranges, it's a favourite location of film makers. Athirappally Waterfalls is located 78 kms from Kochi (Cochin).

The Athirappally falls join the Chalakkudy river after plummeting down 80 ft. The cool spray that covers a large area near the falls makes Athirapally a scenic location. (ANI)

    Luck

Luck is more of a hi-concept film. Three decades ago, Krishna Shah's Shalimar narrated the adventures of a billionaire who assembles/invites criminals/gangsters from across the globe to perform the heist of a precious diamond that he possesses. http://bollywoodmovie.blogspot.com/

Luck holds the key. Luck tells the tale of mafia kingpin Musa

, who has one obsession: To revolutionize the betting industry. For him, life is a gamble and what better way to skew the odds than play with those with luck on their side. Different characters from different parts of the world, each with Lady Luck in their favour, are brought in to play the game of death. With millions at stake, how far will each of them go in courting danger and deceit?

You haven't watched something like this on the Hindi screen before. The game of death is far more dangerous than those witnessed in the reallty show. The revolver sequence [the first challenge], the helicopter jump, the underwater sequence with sharks and the train sequence in the climax give you goose bumps and remain etched in your memory. There's a scene involving a lighter too, which is sure to draw whistles and claps. But the film slips due its ineffectual . It gyrates from engrossing to bas-theek-hain towards the second hour. The romantic track, to be specific, is flaccid. Also, the climax should've concluded the moment Imran wins the jackpot money of Rs. 20 crores. Wasn't that his motive when he entered the game with his eyes wide open? So why this sudden urge to confront

Sanjay Dutt after the game is over? Had the prize money doubled to Rs. 40 crores, it would've made sense. Or, for that matter, if he had a personal score to settle with Sanju, the game of death would've looked plausible. There's no motive in the first place. Moreover, the sequence in the hospital, Even Shruti Haasan's double role doesn't cut ice. Soham Shah has made a stylish film and the fact remains that he has an eye for visuals. But Soham should've stuck to the spirit of the film, instead of getting into diversions [romance and the penultimate scene]. Salim-Sulaiman's music is vibrant and 'Aasma' is easily

    Kambakkht Ishq

Kambakth ishq might leave you with an upset tummy, definitely not because of laughter.

The film is a fuhad farce about the battle of the sexes. Viraj stuntman in Hollywood, thinks women are only good for making love. Simrita certified man-hater, thinks men want just one thing (not hard to guess, again) from women. The two are pitted against each other when Viraj’s brother Lucky and Simriti’s friend Kamini get married. Both Viraj and Simriti don’t approve of the marriage and try to break the match. From then on Viraj and Simriti keep bumping into each other – in airports and planes, in exotic Italian towns and in operation theatre in hospitals.

Director and his band of writers (Kiran Kotrial, Anvita Dutt Gupta, Ishita Mohitra) seem clearly clueless where to take the story so they keep spinning it in circles and throw in a couple of Hollywood faces like that of Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh to flaunt to the audience how Bollywood has graduated from desi item babes to videshi atom bombs. And having run out of the ration of gags, the director gives the story a few melodramatic twists in the end.

Wow! That’s innovative! So we see Akshay giving emotional award-acceptance speeches and feeling the kick of his conscience when he gets the chance to bed Kareena. Ironically, it’s here, when the movie wants you to take kerchiefs out, that you laugh genuinely at the sheer foolishness of the kitschy sentimentality. The brand of humour that dots ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ has already been exemplified. The less said about the music the better.

The dialogues are so sleazy that you’ll keep shying away from the aunty sitting next to you. For the most part Akshay calls Kareena ‘bitch’ and she likewise calls him ‘dog’. Among performances, only Akshay shows his characteristic sparkle here and there. He’s the one who makes the movie worth sitting through while Kareena, playing a surgeon part-timing as a model, overacts most of her part. Neither the anorexic Amrita Arora nor the brooding Aftab are funny. The same goes for who hams through his role of a man looking for opportunities to mint money out of lawsuits. If only he could be sued for his terrible performance. Last words – ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ may get footfalls in theatres but the film is a damned dead comedy. Watch this no-brainer at your own risk.
